The daffodils are starting to poke up between the blooming snowdrops, a sure sign that Spring is just around the corner. Add to that the lengthening days and a welcome wee gift of sunny spells this past week, and we know it won’t be long now.
Soon the Easter bunny will be hopping into town, and here in Scotland, we will be gathering for fellowship, food and fun. And what is involved in a traditional Scottish Easter?
Of course, eggs loom large in our activities. We decorate them, hide them, gift them, hunt them, roll them and munch on them- both the real and chocolate variety. The table usually features a roast lamb dinner, a traditional Scottish meal for special occasions. To mark the Christian origin of Easter, there are hot cross buns and a traditional cake made with fruits and spices and topped with 11 marzipan balls to represent the apostles, minus Judas.
Orkney’s patron saint, St Magnus, is also associated with this time of year, because he was martyred near Easter around 1117. Magnus was a powerful jarl known, not for his blood lust, but rather, for his kindness and religious devotion. Our St Magnus Cathedral charm, earrings and pendant in beautiful Sterling Silver commemorate this legendary figure and the famous church named for him.
Easter is the perfect time to treat someone special to a gift inspired by their Norse, Celtic or Viking heritage, like our silver Italian Chapel pendant and charm. Our gorgeous Celtic cross pendant, available in silver and with yellow or rose gold detail is a lovely Easter gift idea.
For the wee ones’ Easter basket, there’s our Peedie (Orkney word for small) Folk jewelry range for kids designed just for them, in sweet little silver earrings, bangles and pendants.
Each piece of our jewelry is handcrafted right here in Orkney, using traditional methods that haven’t changed much since the times of our ancient Celtic and Viking ancestors. There’s still time for our US and Canadian customers to get their orders in for shipping (for only £8) in time for Easter. We will even gift wrap it for you.
Happy Easter wishes from our family to yours, we hope you have an egg-cellent day!
