Christmas is our family’s favourite time of year. Just as our ancestors have done for thousands of years, rather than despair the darkest days, we celebrate. It’s the time for the returning of the sun, as the hours of daylight are now lengthening by a few minutes each day. Towns, villages and houses are festooned in greenery and decorations, glowing with candles and fairy lights to create a magical holiday scene.
Christmas brings its own traditions and festivities, with church bells ringing across the islands to call families to Christmas Eve service. Afterwards, we open our gifts and warm up our bodies and souls around the table. We enjoy big fireside dinners with Orcadian treats such as smoked fish, Orkney fudge, roast lamb, Yule bread - and of course, a dram or two of Highland Park for toasting!
